Holes - Welcome To Camp Greenlake...duh-duh-dum.

This term, in Room 19 we are reading HOLES by Louis Sachar.  It is about a boy called Stanley Yelnats who goes to Camp Greenlake, a Juvenile detention facility for young boys who have committed a crime.  However, Stanley is innocent.  It is an intriguing story.  Last week Room 19 worked very hard creating Welcome signs for Camp Greenlake.  They had to centre their lettering and many students added creative details to the signs too.  Would you want to go to Camp Greenlake?

Wonder Precepts & Innovations ( Inspirational Quotes)

During Term 1 we are reading a shared novel. The novel we are reading is called, Wonder by R J Palacio.  It is about a young boy called August who was born with a facial disfigurement. At the age of 10, Auggie has to start school.  August is a fun, smart, and kind kid, who despite the challenges he faces, has made friends and has made the world a better place! We crafted some text innovations based on a famous quote from the book - When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.  Please read our ideas based on this quote. Room 19 did very well with the quotes they came up with.

Maths Investigation

A couple of weeks ago (March 6) we went out as a class to measure the middle school court. It was pretty hot out there because there was no shade.  We would like Mr Kelly to provide some shade to protect us and keep us dry if it rains.  The next day, during maths, we worked with a partner to create a variety of pavillion structures that would provide shade.  We worked out our perimeter, columns and roof structures. As you can see, there was lots of great teamwork and discussion. Just remember that maths can be fun and creative!

Collaborative Art Project & Whakatauki

In February, at the beginning of the year, we each were given a square to colour in using oil pastels. We worked on our blending.  We are very proud of our effort and when we put all of our efforts together - we created this!  There are three native birds: the tui, kaka, and kereru. This picture also has a whakatauki (proverb) which accompanies it.  " E koekoe te tui, E ketekete te kaka, E kuku te kereru, (The tui chatters, the kaka cackles, the kereru coos) And like the different birds, each one of us is unique!
